About Me

Toby Tieger.png

Hi, I’m Toby. I studied English with a focus on rhetoric at the University of Chicago and I've been writing scripts for more than a decade.

I’ve also written dozens of reviews, previews, interviews, and press releases. Plus I’ve organized many writing groups, readings, and led a few workshops on story fundamentals.

And I’ve helped many other writers in one-on-one sessions figure out how to express the stories they were trying to tell. Besides writing scripts, that’s been my favorite thing.

In the last couple of years I worked with a production team to create a 30-minute adult fairy tale about Covid isolation that was written, filmed, and edited entirely within isolation. All very meta, especially when the depression monster starts eating people. (Yes, it’s exactly as campy and odd as you’re imagining right now.)

I write philosophical, hopeful and humanist stories about individuals who pull together to build up and save their communities, often focusing on serious issues through a fantastical lens.

I'm currently working on a TV pilot called THE PACIFIST about a “Chosen One” selected to battle monsters who refuses to hurt other creatures. Picture a giant terrifying bug creature. Now picture a boy offering it a gift basket to welcome it to the neighborhood. That’s THE PACIFIST – sort of like if BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER was written by the producers of TED LASSO.
